Karachi, The Chairperson of the Department of Food and Science
Technology at the University of Karachi, Dr Jehan Ara, has written a letter to
the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pirzada Qasim, saying that the admissions under the
quota on sports has exceeded the number of seats reserved for this category.
She is yet to get a response from the VC.
The in charge of the Department of Computer Science, Badar Sami, has also sent
a letter to the Director of Admissions, Dr Saleem Shahzad, reminding him that
no less than 14 candidates were admitted to the department on sports quota though
the sports category had a maximum of three seats.
Dr Saleem Shahzad, however, informed The News that the admissions on sports
quota were not his domain and that it was looked after by the admission committee
for sports.
A senior professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, on condition of anonymity, told
The News that 27 students had been admitted to his faculty, upsetting many senior
teachers who thought such admissions killed merit.
“I am sure that the general admissions given on merit have been fair
and transparent this year, but the sports quota has been used unfairly to admit
those students who should not be in the university. Most of those admitted on
this (sports) quota are not sportsmen or sportswomen,” he said.
According to reliable sources in the university, the entrance test conducted
by the KU had been dubious since the students who did well were declared as
unsuccessful and those who failed declared successful.
Another source informed The News that there were cases of unauthorised admissions
to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and the Bachelor of Public
Administration (BPA).
