Lahore: Lahore High Court on Monday issued notices to Pakistan Bar Council, Punjab Bar Council, Higher Education Commission as well as the others on the application of challenging authority of Punjab University to recognised degrees of law graduation.

A young lawyer filed the case through Advocate Sheraz Zaka challenging that after the formation of Legal Education Rules 2015, the only authority to recognised LLB degrees conferred To High Education Commission and Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) whereas except LLB degrees the only authority to issue equivalence certificates was given to the commission under section 10 of Higher Education Commission Ordinance, he said.

Furthermore, the counsel claimed that the Punjab University had been acting beyond its powers as well as the varsity is getting money from students in the name of issuance of equivalence certificates for admission to masters programmes, which was completely unfair because the only authority was given to HEC and in case of the law degrees Pakistan Bar Council had the authority.

He further asked the court to announce the act of the PU illegal and keep it under control from extorting more money from students in the name of degrees’ recognition.

Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh then issued notices to the respondents and required their replies before June 20th, 2016. The Vice chancellor of Punjab University was also instructed to submit his reply to the application.
