PU professor wins research grant from Germany

Lahore, Punjab University Department of Botany Associate Prof Dr Faheem Aftab has earned a return research grant from Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung/Foundation, Germany. PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has congratulated Dr Faheem on this achievement.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has said that 1.4 billion Muslims had almost no value because they were not participating in the creation of new knowledge.

He was addressing the orientation ceremony of 12th batch of Institute of Business and Information Technology at its lawns here on Thursday. PU Registrar Prof Dr Khan Raas Masood, Dean Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences Prof Dr Ehsan Malik, Principal IBIT Prof Dr Mansoor Sarwar, Member Syndicate Prof Dr Shaukat Ali, senior faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran while addressing the ceremony said that the weapons of destruction had become powerful to an extent that mankind could wipe itself out within a very short time. He said that man had become the master of the globe but the man had also engaged in persistent warfare against fellow human beings. He said that an Australian Jewish scientist Gideon Polya had written in his book “Body Count”, published in 2007, that there had been 1.3 billion avoidable deaths during the period 1950-2005 of which 600 million were Muslims. He said that weakness invited aggression and as such the source of all strife was the weakness among nations.

He said that knowledge was the source of power but no nation could create new knowledge without the strength of character. He said that the Muslims were facing all these problems because creation of new knowledge was not their priority.

Dr Mansoor Sarwar congratulated the newly admitted students and said that since IBIT’s inception in 2001, we had produced over 1,300 graduates and IBIT graduates were being hired on preference. He hoped that the students would behave responsibly and follow the norms of average Pakistani as they could best serve the nation by being the best students and professionals.
