Pakistani universities improving international ranking: HEC Chairperson

Islamabad, The Chairperson of Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Mukhtar Ahmed said that the local educational institutes of Pakistan are improving their ranking continuously even though we haven’ the best educational institutes in the world. He said in a meeting with National Assembly Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training. HEC is taking steps to improve the educational standards in the country.

He stated that there are two types of ranking of educational institutions, global rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). In the global rankings, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is ranked among the top 500 universities around the world while in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings for Asia, Pakistan is improving gradually.

Pakistani universities in Asia top 300

Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) - ranked 106

Aga Khan University - ranked 116

Quaid-i-azam University - ranked 123

National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Islamabad - ranked 129

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) - ranked 181-190

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology - ranked 201-250

University of Karachi - ranked 201-250

University of the Punjab - ranked 201-250

University of Agriculture, Faisalabad - ranked 251-300

University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore - ranked 251-300

In 2014, as many as 10 Pakistani institutes got the place in the list of top 300 Asian universities

"Earlier in 2011, there were only four Pakistani universities and in 2013, the ratio increased to six and in 2014 there were 10 Pakistani universities ranked among top 300 Asian universities" Dr Mukhtar said.

Dr Mukhtar informed that the commission always received funds late and due to this reason Pakistani students studying abroad suffered a lot and fail to clear the dues on time.

After the setting up of HEC in 2002, the decision was taken to send the students in abroad countries for higher education on government’s expense. Until now around 7,531 overseas scholarships have been awarded to MS and PhD students and 3,862 of them have completed their studies.

In 2002, around 816 research publications were published which reached to 8, 000 in 2013. HEC promotes the research and scientific work.
