Lahore: The government of Punjab has set aside the budget for this year and one main thing that is clear from the announced budget that the government will be spending a lot on projects focused on promoting higher education in Pakistan.
Along with the announcement of budget, it was revealed that new universities will also be established in 5 cities of Pakistan; Sialkot, Rahim Yar Khan, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur.
Punjab Finance Minister, Dr. Ayesha Ghous Pasha, presented the annual budget which has a disbursement of Rs. 1681.41 billion during the Punjab Assembly session held this Monday.
The total budget has been divided into different categories out of which Rs. 20 billion has been given for the agriculture sector, Rs. 1,584 million for social welfare while Rs. 7.5 billion for industrial development.
Away from the establishment of new university campuses in the abovementioned cities, the government will also be offering funds for missing facilities in 49 colleges, sub campuses of universities in distant areas as well as the establishment of 36 degree colleges in Punjab Province.
Furthermore, Rs. 12,000 million has also been allotted for different projects of the Punjab Education Foundation. Rs. 3000 million have been given for Daanish Schools, Rs. 4000 million have been given for Punjab Education Endowment Fund (PEEF) whereas Rs. 2000 million have been given for the Lahore Knowledge Park. It also includes the IT and engineering universities which would be established in Lahore under Public Private Partnership mode.
In the school sector, government will use these funds to provide the missing facilities, establishes IT labs in 500 schools that have the highest registration number, construction of 12,500 extra class rooms in over-crowded schools, renovation of 4,063 dangerous school buildings, opening of 500 new primary schools via PEF, provision of internal merit based scholarships and teacher training.
