Lahore, The Government College University Lahore Debating
Society (GCUDS) has won 93 oratory awards including 23 Team Trophies and 26
Best Speaker Awards at the 39 national and international debating competitions
held across the country in the academic year 2009-10.
According to the GCUDS annual report 2009-10, the university’s orators
lifted team trophies in the declamation contests held at the University of Central
Punjab, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chand Bagh Public School, Government
Postgraduate College, Jhang University of ARID Agriculture Rawalpindi, Nazria-e-Pakistan
Foundation, Government College for Women, Gulberg and Defense Degree College
Lahore.
The GCUDS bagged the English Parliamentary Team Trophies at the Forman Christian
College Lahore, Lahore School of Economics, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Technology
and Lahore University of Management Sciences. The GCU Debating Society also
won the Urdu Parliamentary Team Trophies at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute
of Technology, Urdu Challenge Cup and Lahore Grammar School Defense.
The GCUDS also lifted the team trophies at the recitation competitions held
at the Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore, Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore
and Government College Shahkot.
According to the report, the GCUDS teams also won four runners-up trophies
and two third positions. Individually, the GCU orators also won 28 second position
awards, eight third positions and two consolation prizes.
GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab has congratulated the university’s
best speakers Ummar Ziaud Din, Adeel Anjum, Ali Zafar, Saadul Hassan Omer Jee
Saleemi, Almas Sabih Saqib, Zulqernain Cheena, M. Omer Khan, Rana Hqamza Ijaz,
Saad Farooq, Babar Arshad, Hamza Tariq, Kamran Hussain Hasmi, Tajmeel Hussain,
Jawad Ali Abid, Umair Mushtaq, Khaqan Arshad, Salman Tariq, Noorul-Murtaza,
Usman Ali, Rana Hamza Ijaz AND Sardar Junaid Bhadur Khan for their outstanding
performance at the debating contests. He said that the remarkable achievement
was made possible to the untiring efforts of these students. “Elders live
through their children and it is students’ achievements which bring laurels
to their alma maters,” he added.
GCU Debating Society Adviser Sadiq Awan has also expressed pleasure, saying
that in the academic year 2008-09, GCUDS had won 148 oratory awards at the 61
debating competitions held across the country. However, he said, in the academic
year 2009-10, only 39 debating events were held.
