Karachi: The aspirants no longer have to wait in long lines or pay numerous visits to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) office to get their degrees attested, because now it is just a click away.

The commission has launched an online degree attestation and verification system to ease the degree verification procedure for the general public, upgrade the attestation procedure and check the menace of fake degrees.

As per the letter issued by the executive director of the HEC, Prof Dr Arshad Ali, to the vice-chancellors (VCs) of government and private universities crosswise the country, Higher Education Commission through its ordinance, has been allowed to determine the equivalence and recognition of degrees, diplomas as well as certificates awarded by the institutes in the country as well as abroad.

The main idea was to make it easy and simple for students across the country to get their degrees verified, said HEC spokesperson Ayesha Ikram while talking to The Express Tribune.

Presently, degrees can be attested and verified from the regional offices in Karachi, Quetta and Lahore however soon they will be verified from other parts of the country, she added.

How it works

The aspirants can upload scanned copies of their documents on the portal and apply for online verification of their degrees.

The system would be integrated together with the National Database and Regulation Authority (NADRA) to verify the identity of the candidates through their national identity card number.

Furthermore, it is linked along with the Pakistan Qualification Register (PQR), which is a database of varsities. If the degree programme of the candidate is not in the PQR database then he or she will not able the choose the required degree programme for the attestation.

To further improve the perfection and efficiency of the system, it would also give access to the controller of exams to view the scanned copies of the degrees and verify them online.

This procedure will be completed within 24 hours and the system will automatically inform the Vice Chancellor of the university via an email if it is not completed because of any reason.

At the end, a quick response (QR) code on the ticket or stamp along with the identity card number of candidate, name, degree title and level of qualification will be issued.

The QR code will assist in decreasing the false attestations of degrees.

The commission will also arrange a 1 day workshop for the controllers of universities at their regional offices to familiarize them along with the system.

Doubtful feasibility

At the same time, the examination controller of University of Karachi Arshad Azmi remarked that the new system will get no ease for the people, as documents will still be required to be sent to the offices for final verification.

“It is not possible to attest a degree from 1960s and it would have to be verified first,” he said, adding that most of their records are present in registers but they are not available online.
