Lahore, Government College University Lahore Political Science Department student Altaf Hussain has set a new record in Javelin Throw on the second day of the GCU 114th Annual Sports. Altaf threw Javelin 66.90, breaking his previous record of 64.86 that was set in 2010.

Addressing the prize-distribution ceremony at the second day of annual sports, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that the beauty of the GCU Annual Sports lied in collective participation of students, teachers and Old Ravians. “Students draw inspiration from teachers who instil the real essence of healthy competition among the sportsmen,” he added.

Later, Waseem Sajid of Urdu Department won the 5,000-metre race by putting his endurance to test; finishing the race in 21:01:59 seconds. Waseem Sajid also won the 1,500-metre race by covering the distance in 5:02:19 seconds. However, in 100 metres final, Tariq Mahmood of Urdu Department reached the finishing line in 11:22 seconds which earned him a Gold Medal. Nawab Mughal hailing from Physical Education Department won the Pole Vault. Intermediate students won the 4x100 Meters Relay while Urdu Department stood second. Physical Education Department’s girl team won 4x100 Meters Relay in 1.13.68 seconds. Marryam from Physical Education Department stood first in Short Put competition. Another Physical Education Department student, Rizwana, won 400m race, while Sana Cheema of the same department got first position in 100m race and completed her distance in 16.91 seconds.

In Triple Jump, Economic Department student Asad Zubair bagged the first position. Muhammad Awais of Intermediate won Long Jump, while Rizwana from Physical Education Department stood first in Long Jump girls’ completion.

Earlier, team of Physical Education Department (girls) secured the first position in 4x100 metres relay race. The GCU Bio-Technology faculty members won the 4x100 metres staff relay race.

GCU Director Sports Khadim Ali Khan said the most enthralling Gymkhana events which include Ministerial Staff Race, Naib Qasid Race, Four Legged Race, Cricket Throw Ball for Girls, Pillow Fighting, Staff Children Race, Stilt Race, 60 Meter Race, Sack Race, Chatti Race for Girls and Obstacle Race will be held at the closing ceremony to be held at GCU Oval Ground tomorrow (Sunday).
