Lahore, The Government College University Lahore has hosted one the biggest Pakistan Student Congress 2011 to bring together students with different personalities, belonging to different environments, cultures and schools of thought from all over Pakistan and inculcate leadership qualities. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman and LUMS Vice Provost Dr. Shafay Shumayl chaired the closing and opening ceremonies of the four-day Pakistan Student Congress that was organized by IEEE Pakistan in collaboration with GCU Computer Sciences Department. Students from 40 educational institutions LUMS, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, NUST Islamabad, Military College of Signals, PNEC Karachi and Karachi Institute of Engineering and Technology took part in the Congress that was spread over 31 sessions which include competitions, workshops, seminars, talks and social integration activities. The Congress kicked off with a lecture of Google Pakistan Head Badur Khusnood on “TECHNO-PRENUERSHIP”, in which he told the students to how to earn money online. The Leadership Training Workshop and motivational and theme talks were also part of the four-day activities. The most appreciated event of the Congress was “Campus Conversation – a career counseling session,” which was conducted by top management officials of various universities and industries.
Talking about the details of the competitions, IEEE GCUL President Ali Turab Gilani said the NUST Islamabad won IEEE Ethics Competition that was organized events to encourage the study and awareness of professional ethics among students. The competition included a presentation and defense of a case analysis. The “Bits on Fire: Speed Programming Competition” ends in a draws as unfortunately all the participating teams failed to solve the given problems. The Karachi Institute of Engineering and Technology won the first prize Engineering Project Exhibition.
Chairing the closing ceremony of Pakistan Student Congress, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that such events provide great opportunity to students to exhibit their creativity and talent, and a chance to learn from other students. He congratulated the students of GCU Computer Sciences Department on successfully hosting such big event, adding that “it is a best way to exhibit a united team's talent, dedication, and organizing skill on the national level.”
Later, GCU Computer Sciences Department Chairperson Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Khan announced that the GCU was declared the Best Student Branch among all universities this while GCU student Syeda Synnia Tanveer was chosen as the Best IEEE student Volunteer of the year 2011.
