Rawalpindi, Over 1,000 graduates of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) were conferred degrees in different disciplines at its 10th convocation on Tuesday.

Governor Punjab Salman Taseer awarded the degrees to the students at the Convention Centre in Islamabad in presence of their parents, teaching faculty and other guests. Federal Minister for Education Sardar Aseff Ahmed Ali and Benazir Bhutto Income Support Programme (BISP) chairperson Farzana Raja were also present.

Twenty-eight female graduates in 15 disciplines, both at post-graduate and under-graduate levels, were given gold medals for their outstanding achievements.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor said a silent revolution was taking place in the country as more and more female students were achieving success and outstanding performances.

It seemed women were going to control the future of the country, he said stressing that the PPP-led government was actively advocating women`s emancipation.

He urged the students to work for the under-privileged women as they needed their support to shed off poverty and come to the mainstream.

He also asked them to help the flood-affected people, especially in rebuilding their houses, adding students from 17 public sector universities had already been engaged in helping the displaced people in the rehabilitation process.

Vice Chancellor Saeeda Asadullah said the university had come a long way since its inception in 1998 having doubled the disciplines from the initial eight and initiating PhD programs.

She said more courses would be offered after completion of the under-construction campus at Chakri Road.
