ISLAMABAD, Minister for Education Ahsan Iqbal has underlined
the need for launching extensive training programmes for teachers to equip them
with modern skills.
He was chairing a meeting attended by the heads of the departments of Institutes
of Education Research of major Universities of the country.
Ahsan Iqbal said teachers played a pivotal role in preparing students for the
service of society, thus, elaborate measures were needed for their capacity building
to enable them discharge their duties, effectively.
He said that a two-day national conference would be called to discuss various
issues relating to teachers’ education to ensure quality education in the
country.
He said that the teachers training institutes must impart best possible training
to the teachers and called for strong coordination among these institutes.
The Minister said that all the teacher training institutes be linked together
and must share their research with each other.
The Curriculum for the academic session 2008-2009 was also discussed in the meeting.
The Minister said that steps were being taken to devise a curriculum that should
meet the challenges of globalization and pursuit of excellence.
The Education Minister asked the participants of the meeting to create a network
of research work so that it was utilised in letter and spirit.
He asked the participants to give their expert opinion on the curriculum that
was planned to be introduced in 2009 within three weeks.
He also directed for sending the draft of the new curricula to the heads of the
teachers training institutes for their expert opinion.
The Minister also directed the heads of the educational institutes to start leadership
programme for the teachers.
The teachers prior to their appointment as head teacher must be sent for mandatory
leadership programme of at least six months duration, the Minister said.
