Islamabad, Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad soon will have non-commercial “Educational TV Channel”, an initiative of Educational Media Institution. Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira in this regard has assured the information ministry with full support.

He further said while addressing at the Seeratun Nabi Conference organized at Nusrat Bhutto Auditorium of the AIOU, that Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television (PTV) would also train the persons for the planned channel.

AIOU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi said on this occasion that the university is determined to prepare its syllabus having an objective of increasing the knowledge base of students and to nurture the character of the youth.

He further revealed that besides teaching ethics through radio and television channels, the university would also print moral lessons on the cover of the 2.5 million books printed every semester. Refresher courses would also be organized for muezzins and khateebs of mosques to deliver modern developments so that they could teach the masses through their addresses.

Besides this he also revealed that the AIOU had initiated a program for dropout students to get them back towards education, in the first phase, about 10,500 students had been registered in the university.

The AIOU VC said that they are intended to instruct over 15,000 students in Chitral next year.
AIOU has the best radio and TV studios. The university organized all educational radio and TV programs here in the management of the most trained producers and engineers, Dr Nazir said.

Moreover, he said that the AIOU was working on a vision to promote its educational activities to the students living in the rural areas to ensure that everyone had equal access to quality education. It was also declared that AIOU would also start an open-schooling program on “Educate a Child”, and a target had been made to educate one million children through this scheme. The program would focus on the introduction of socio-economic and skill-based courses, so that students could earn their livelihood and participate in the development of the country.

Dr Sangi proposed including “Non-commercial TV channels” in the AIOU Educational Media Institution.

International Islamic University Vice-President Prof Sajidur Rehman recommended to the information minister to establish an exclusive unit at the radio and TV channels of the varsity to broadcast research based programs to teach the community of basic Islamic moralities and guidelines.
