TAXILA, Wah Medical College (WMC) held its second convocation on Saturday in which the University of Health Sciences (UHS) vice-chancellor Dr Malik Hussain Mubashar awarded degrees to 95 students.

Student Syeda Sana Bukhari was declared best graduate of the college for the academic session 2004-2009. Chairman Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) Lt-Gen Shujaat Zamir Dar presided over the convocation.

The convocation was largely attended by the graduates, medical teachers from different institutions, principals of various medical colleges, former principals and faculty members of WMC, members of Pakistan Ordnance Factories board besides public representatives and doctors.

The UHS vice-chancellor administered the oath to fresh medical graduates and also recited few verses from the poetry of Baba Bulleh Shah.

In his presidential address, POF Chief Lt-Gen Shujaat Zamir Dar said the city of Wah Cantonment with 98 per cent literacy rate was striving to establish modern state of the art educational institutions, colleges and universities.

He advised the doctors to opt for rural areas as well and improve health management system so that medical errors could be minimised.

University of Health Sciences (Lahore) ViceChancellor Prof Dr Malik Hussain Mubashar, in his address, welcomed the upcoming doctors in the “world of healing”. He said medical education in Pakistan was at its lowest ebb as Pakistan needed as many as 359 PhDs to impart biomedical sciences in different medical colleges “but we have only eight in entire Punjab”.

He said University of Health Sciences took it as a challenge to bring revolution in medical education and set to produce 238 MPhil doctors during next 2-3years.

He said that the University of Health Sciences took question papers from international ideal data base consortium comprising six countries like Canada and Malaysia and that was the reason that UHS degree was recognised all over the world.

WMC Principal Maj-Gen (retired) Farrukh Sair said convocation of a medical college was a stepping-stone for fresh medical graduates to enter a life full of challenges.

He said in short span of five years since its establishment the college had attained a position among public sector medical education institutions.

Talking to mediapersons, Syeda Sana Bukhari, the first position holder, vowed to make all out efforts to cure the ailing community.

She thanked the POF management for establishment of medical college in the city, enabling children of POF workers to get quality medical education.
