To Trust Or Not To Trust

The Hair-dresser, the Pilot, the Cab driver... How many of them do we actually know?

And we trust them.

We trust them to cut without hurting, land without crashing and to drive without getting into an accident.

We do not fret that the people who cut tomatoes for our salad may have skipped the sink after attending to a call-of-nature.

Still we trust them.

We reflexively trust hundreds of strangers everyday without thinking whether they will follow the rules or whether they will care and be responsible. I realized this when I settled on a chair and relinquished myself to a woman. I, only because of her profession, let her take a pair of sharp scissors and snip away through my hair and she chatted away about her most recent trip to a hill-station.

‘Clip-Clip-Clip’ went her sharp scissors so close to my scalp and I couldn’t see what she was doing at the back of my head. Yet, I trusted her.

We even toss cherries into our mouth without giving a second thought to whether someone washed off the pesticides which could make us sick.

We trust so many people without a second thought. But ever wondered why it is easier to open up to a complete stranger rather than to a close friend? You meet someone new, you don’t think too much about trusting that person to be a part of your life. But when someone is already a part of your life, you think time and again whether to say what’s on your mind.

There could be a reason behind it. But What??

Perhaps, fear? Fear of what... Maybe the fear of judgment. We don’t care what other people think about us. We care about what our loved ones think...

Or perhaps, why we might confide in strangers/ new people is that we don’t know them. Perhaps we don’t worry about upsetting them if we confide in them with something personal…because that something might or might not be pleasant to hear...

Just a point to ponder!
